Tony Ferguson will step inside the octagon for yet another attempt at UFC lightweight gold, as he faces Justin Gaethje for the interim title. The UFC 249 Countdown dives deep into the training camp and lead-up to the Ferguson vs. Gaethje match-up.
Ferguson was expected to take on lightweight kingpin Khabib Nurmagomedov for the 155-pound title, however, due to the coronavirus global pandemic, the Russian was forced off the fight card.
Ferguson vs. Gaethje is going to be fireworks
Ferguson (25-3) has been on a tear since 2013. The man who goes by “El Cucuy” has won 12 in a row and has earned ‘of the night’ bonuses on eight of those occasions. At UFC 216, Ferguson earned the interim lightweight championship with a third-round submission against Kevin Lee, however, he was later stripped of the title due to injury. Most recently, the 36-year-old finished Donald Cerrone in the second round of their UFC 238 match-up.
Gaethje (21-2) came into the UFC as the best lightweight outside of the promotion. He earned a second-round knockout in his octagon debut against Michael Johnson and has gone 4-2 under the UFC banner. He is currently riding a three-fight winning streak with all three coming via first-round knockout. Most recently, Gaethje knocked out Donald Cerrone at UFC on ESPN+ 16 to earn the shot at Ferguson.
UFC 249 goes down on May 9 from Jacksonville, Florida. The co-main event is a battle for the UFC bantamweight championship, as current king Henry Cejudo takes on former champion Dominick Cruz.
