UFC on ESPN 13 took place on Wednesday, July 16th. In the main event, Calvin Kattar won a decision over Dan Ige. Today we will be talking about three things we learned from this event.

Mounir Lazzez Is Legit

Mounir Lazzez won a unanimous decision over Abdul Razak Alhassan on Wednesday night. Lazzez looked extremely impressive in his UFC debut. Seemingly dominating every aspect of the fight. To make his win more impressive, Alhassan missed weight, weighing in at 174. After his fight, Lazzez called out Mike Perry in his post-fight interview. His exciting style and talking skills on the mic and great tools in making a superstar in the UFC.

Khamzat Chimaev – More Than A Power Puncher

Khamzat Chimaev was able to submit John Phillips via D’Arce choke on Wednesday night. Phillips was known as “the white Mike Tyson” coming into the fight. While Chimaev has four out of his seven wins by TKO or knockout. So before the fight started it seemed like we were going to see a stand-up battle. Chimaev surprised everyone by landing an early takedown and dominating the grappling. Early in the second round, Chimaev was able to catch Phillips in a D’Arce choke and prove to everyone that he is much more than just a power striker.

Jared Gordon Has Intense Top Pressure

Fan-favorite fights are nothing new to Jared Gordon. On Wednesday night Gordon won a dominant unanimous decision victory over Chris Fishgold. Fishgold has a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu, so naturally, fans assumed Gordon would try to keep the fight standing and turn it into a brawl. Gordon did just the opposite. He took Fishgold down and used intense top pressure to keep him there. While on the ground Gordon delivered some devastating ground and pound. Gordon dominated the grappling so much that the judges all had the fight scored 30-26.

All three of these fighters proved to us that they are a lot more well rounded then we thought. What did you learn from UFC on ESPN 13? Let us know in the comments down below.

My name is Michael Lynch. I’m originally from Long Island, NY, but I reside in Columbia, Sc. I’ve been covering MMA for almost two years now. I’ve covered events such as Island fights and the PFL. I also have a YouTube channel where I do fight companions and UFC fight previews. I have recently started to train in mma and would like to have my first fight in 2020. I believe that as a journalist I need to experience what these fighters go threw, in order to understand their POV.
