UFC 255 to Feature Two Flyweight Title Fights

The UFC train never stops rolling along. Today it was announced that UFC 255 will feature a pair of flyweight championship matches. Deiveson Figueiredo (19-1) will defend his newly won championship in a clash with former bantamweight champion, Cody Garbrandt (12-3).

Deiveson Figueiredo knocked out Joe Benavidez in spectacular fashion last month becoming the flyweight champion. The belt was vacated when Henry Cejudo opted to retire after defeating Dominick Cruz back in May.

It seems a bit odd that Garbrandt will be receiving the next title shot, being that he’s never competed at flyweight before and is 1-3 in his last four outings. You have to feel for flyweights such as Brandon Moreno but such is life in the UFC. Garbrandt is the bigger draw and as such, he leapfrogs to the top of the ladder.

The other flyweight championship bout on the card features the brilliantly talented Valentina Shevchenko (19-3) will put her title on the line when she takes on Jennifer Maia (18-6). Shevchenko has won five consecutive fights and has looked tremendous in doing so. She has three stoppages in those five wins. Shevchenko stopped Priscila Cachoeira, Jessica Eye, and Katlyn Chookagian. “Bullet” also defeated Liz Carmouche and former champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk.

Jennifer Maia has won three of four and just beat highly ranked Joanne Calderwood via first-round armbar earlier this month. She also beat Roxanne Modafferi and Alexis Davis as well. She was defeated by Katlyn Chookigian via a unanimous decision. Maia is currently ranked third in the UFC flyweight division. She’s getting a massive opportunity here against Shevchenko.

UFC 255 is scheduled to take place on November 21, 2020, and no other fights have been announced for the event. The location for the event has not yet been announced.
