A fight between former UFC two-time bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and rising bantamweight prospect Casey Kenney has been unofficially announced for UFC 259.
MMAJunkie.com broke the news after being informed by anonymous sources. It will be Cruz’s first non-title fight since his first-round knockout victory over Takeya Mizugaki six years ago. UFC 259 will be held on March 6th, 2021 though few other details about it are known at this juncture.
Dominick Cruz vs. Casey Kenney Set for UFC 259
Cruz is coming off of a TKO loss to Henry Cejudo earlier this year in a bid to regain the bantamweight title for the third time. That fight marked the end of Cruz’s long hiatus from fighting after he lost the title to Cody Garbrandt in 2016. Cruz is widely regarded as one of the greatest bantamweights ever. He is tied with TJ Dillashaw for the most bantamweight title fight victories in UFC history on top of several WEC title fight victories.
Kenney comes off of a decision win over fellow bantamweight prospect Nathaniel Wood at UFC 254. The fight was awarded Fight of the Night honours. Kenney is a former two-weight LFA champion, having held both their flyweight and bantamweight belts. He is currently on a three-fight win streak in the UFC after beating Louis Smolka, Heili Alateng and Wood back to back.
