ONE Championship 2021 Preview

After the year that was 2020, the new year is looking bright across the mixed martial arts landscape. For ONE Championship, the upcoming year will feature big match after big match.

ONE Championship 2021 Preview

In a teaser video for the upcoming year, ONE gave fans a little taste of what to expect, including the ONE Atomweight Grand Prix, redemption tours for Aung La N Sang and Martin Nguyen after losing their title at ONE: Inside The Matrix, and Brandon Vera defending the ONE Heavyweight World Championship.

However, it will be the ONE Flyweight World Championship that garners the first marquee meeting of the year.

As previously announced by the promotion, top-ranked Demetrious Johnson will meet reigning king Adriano Moraes on February 24 for the gold.

Since Johnson’s arrival to ONE, this matchup has been circled by fans around the world. Johnson, perhaps the greatest mixed martial artist of all-time, took down the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix title and has been waiting for his meeting with Moraes.

The global pandemic forced the bout to be pushed, but now that it has a date, everyone can get their ducks in a row for what is sure to be an amazing contest.

Moraes has power in his hands, but it is his ground game that has most of his rival’s attention. With nine career submissions, the Brazilian has showcased his near-perfect BJJ on the global stage. Submitting Johnson would not only be a feather in his cap but elevate him to new stardom.

The American’s brilliance has been well-established. He is peerless in nearly every facet of his game and has let his creative spark inside the confines of whatever structure he is competing inside. Every Demetrious Johnson bout is a must-see.

Capturing another title would only go to grow his legend in the sport.

2021 is already looking bright.

Moraes vs. Johnson leading the way with a deep slate of action following it should set ONE up for a massive year.

The heavyweight division, led by Vera, is intriguing as Arjan Bhullar and Amir Aliakbari are both on his heels. The ONE Atomweight Grand Prix will put the winner on track to take on a returning Angela Lee. Thanh Le’s era of reign over the featherweights will begin to take shape as Garry Tonon nears his title bid as well.

The depth of the sport continues to show itself. Elite athletes worldwide are ready to get back to a normal schedule and put their skills to the test as they chase ultimate glory. The 2021 schedule is looking to be a mixed martial arts fan’s wildest dreams.

Getting it started with “Mighty Mouse” going for gold is the absolute perfect way to begin this new campaign.
