Every UFC Fight Change and Cancellation of 2022

2022 has come to an end for the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

A memorable year it was for the world’s leading fight promotion. Lightweight Charles Oliveira finally secured a UFC championship with his rear-naked choke comeback over Justin Gaethje in May as welterweight Leon Edwards secured a highlight-reel knockout in August with his title-capturing, fifth-round head-kick over Kamaru Usman. November’s UFC 281 saw eleven fights end by way of finish tying 2018’s UFC 224 for the most finishes in a single event in promotional history. Most notably, light heavyweights Jiri Prochazka and Glover Teixeira battled to one of the greatest fights in mixed martial arts history, Prochazka taking the championship away from Teixeira with less than 30 seconds remaining in their June contest.

Fight changes and cancellations, however, have played their unfortunate part throughout 2022 for many athletes among the ever-changing fight roster. Inspiration to return once more to this subject matter was drawn from our 2016 and 2017 data collection.

In the upcoming documentation, section one will feature “Overall Statistics giving an explanatory breakdown of all the fight changes and cancellations throughout the year. Section two will see the “Monthly Rundown” with a source included for every individual fight change and/or cancellation. All assistance in confirmation comes from the linked sources and Tapology.

MMASucka presents every UFC Fight Change and Cancellation of 2022.

  • Botelho and Evloev both tested positive for UFC 270 on January 22nd.
  • Both Cosce brothers tested positive (Orion in February, Louis in April).

Askar Askarov, Rogerio Bontorin, Khamzat Chimaev, Daniel da Silva, Ariane Lipski, Ilia Topuria, and Zubaira Tukhugov were the seven fighters to have a fight changed and/or cancelled specifically due to weight cut issues.

Five fights in 2022 were cancelled due as both fighters were removed from their fight. These reasoning for removal occurred nearly simultaneously without a chance for the promotion to find a replacement. In addition, their individual purposes for pulling out were not included in other categories.

  • Zarrukh Adashev (injury) vs. Kleydson Rodrigues (Influenza A-H3N2)
  • Abubakar Nurmagomedov (visa issues) vs. Philip Rowe (injury)
  • Danny Henry (injury) vs. Ricardo Ramos (injury)
  • Coby Garbrandt (injury) vs. Rani Yahya (injury)
  • William Knight vs. Marcin Prachnio (no reasoning from Knight or Prachnio)

Four fights in 2022 were changed and/or cancelled as a fighter was moved to fight someone else.

  • Shamil Abdurakhimov vs. Tom Aspinall. Aspinall was moved to fight in the main event against Alexander Volkov. Abdurakhimov fought Sergei Pavlovich.
  • Dricus du Plessis vs. Anthony Hernandez. Du Plessis was moved to fight on the main card against Kelvin Gastelum. The fight would not occur as Gastelum was forced out. Hernandez fought Josh Fremd.
  • Tony Ferguson vs. Li Jingliang. Ferguson was moved to fight on the main card against Nate Diaz. Jingliang fought Daniel Rodriguez.
  • Kevin Holland vs. Daniel Rodriguez. Holland was moved to fight in the main event against Khamzat Chimaev. Rodriguez fought Li Jingliang.

Mike Davis, Leah Letson, Cheyanne Vlismas, and Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos had a fight changed and/or cancelled due to undisclosed personal reasons.

Garrett Armfield, Daniel Rodriguez, and Sean Strickland had a fight changed and/or cancelled due to infection. Armfield and Rodriguez both suffered staph infections while Strickland was met with an unspecified finger infection. Both Rodriguez and Strickland saw their fights scheduled at UFC Vegas 62 on October 15th.

Yamato Nishikawa and Slim Trabelsi had their fights changed and/or cancelled due to contractual conflicts. Both fighters joined the UFC to fight on short notice against Magomed Mustafaev and Parker Porter, respectively. However, Nishikawa still had contractual obligations with Japan’s Shooto, and Trabelsi still had contractual obligations with France’s ARES Fighting Championship. Nishikawa and Trabelsi saw their fights scheduled at UFC 280 on October 22nd.

Michel Pereira and Khalid Taha had their fights changed and/or cancelled due to COVID-19 protocols. Neither Pereira or Taha tested positive for their scheduled fights but rather had a member within their fight camp test positive.

Aspen Ladd and Alex Perez was the only fighter to have a fight changed and/or cancelled specifically due to missing weight. Ladd was removed from the UFC after missing weight for the third time in her promotional tenure. Perez’s opponent, Matt Schnell, refused to accept a catchweight bout after Perez weighed in two pounds over the flyweight limit. It was the third time a fight between Perez and Schnell had fallen through.

Bobby Green and Manel Kape had their fights changed and/or cancelled due to a USADA violation. Green, who tested positive with hormone Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), was ultimately suspended six months and was eligible for return after November 16th. Kape, who tested positive with steroid Dehydrochloromethyltestosterone (DHCMT), was monitored and passed USADA requirements before his eligible return after September 30th.

Dhiego Lima was the only fighter to have a fight changed and/or cancelled due to his retirement from MMA.

Liudvik Sholinian was the only fighter to have a fight changed and/or cancelled due to military services. He bravely returned to Ukraine to defend his home country in the Russo-Ukrainian War.

Ben Rothwell was the only fighter to have a fight changed and/or cancelled due to being released from the UFC.

Cedric Doumbe was the only fighter to have a fight changed and/or cancelled due to his removal by the French MMA Federation (FMMAF). A ruling indicated that a fighter under ten professional bouts must not have a differential of more than four fights between he and his opponent. Doumbe had just two professional fights while his then-scheduled opponent, Darian Weeks, had seven professional fights.

Josh Quinlan was the only fighter to have a fight changed and/or cancelled due to his removal by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). An atypical drug finding saw Quinlan pulled from his fight with Jason Witt. After numerous negative tests and commission oversight, his fight with Whitt occurred one week after the incident.

Jennifer Gonzalez was the only fighter to have a fight changed and/or cancelled due to an incident with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). A disagreement at the home of Gonzalez regarding at-home drug testing guidelines led to her removal from both her Josiane Nunes fight and UFC contract.

Jailton Almeida, Manon Fiorot, Maxim Grishin, and Jamie Pickett were the four fighters who experienced the most fight changes and/or cancellations in 2022. Each fighter suffered a total of FOUR fight changes and/or cancellations.

Manon Fiorot and Ovince Saint Preux experienced the most fight changes and/or cancellations at a single event without finding a replacement. Both fighters were scheduled with THREE different opponents before being removed from the event entirely as the promotion was unable to schedule a fourth fighter.

Two UFC cards tied for the most fight changes and/or cancellations of 2022. Both events suffered a total of TEN fight changes/cancellations.

  • UFC Vegas 46: Kattar vs. Chikadze (January 15th)
  • UFC 270: Ngannou vs. Gane (January 22nd)

One UFC card experienced NO fight changes and/or cancellations in 2022.

Kevin Holland versus Daniel Rodriguez was the only catchweight fight to be changed and/or cancelled. 26 fights in 2022 where an opponent was forced out saw the ready fighter get rescheduled with a different opponent for the same event. However, due to various circumstances, the subsequent fight also did not happen.

84 fights in 2022 where an opponent was forced out saw the opposite fighter unable to be scheduled with a replacement. As a result, these fighters were removed from the event entirely.

A total of four fighters in 2022 experienced THREE opponent changes before fighting.

  1. Sam Alvey, UFC Vegas 47, February 5th. Alvey lost both Ian Heinisch and Phil Hawes before fighting Brendan Allen.

  1. Bill Algeo vs. Herbert Burns. Algeo was to fight Billy Quarantillo, while Burns was to fight Khusein Askhabov. An injury to Quarantillo and visa issues for Burns resulted in the pairing between Algeo and Burns.
  2. Nate Diaz vs. Tony Ferguson. Diaz was to fight Khamzat Chimaev, while Ferguson was to fight Li Jingliang. Diaz chose not to accept a catchweight fight with Chimaev and, as a result, was instead paired with Ferguson.
  3. Khamzat Chimaev vs. Kevin Holland. Chimaev was to fight Nate Diaz, while Holland was to fight Daniel Rodriguez. Diaz chose not to accept a catchweight fight with Chimaev and, as a result, saw Chimaev paired with Holland.
  4. Li Jingliang vs. Daniel Rodriguez. Jingliang was to fight Tony Ferguson, while Rodriguez was to fight Kevin Holland. Jingliang and Rodriguez were rescheduled to fight each other after Ferguson and Holland received different opponents.

A total of 77 fights in 2022 received a replacement opponent EXCLUDING the four fights above. The percentage in parenthesis indicates the average rate of defeat, victory, or draw.

  • Replacement LOSS = 51 (66%)
  • Replacement WIN = 25 (33%)
  • Replacement DRAW = 1 (1%)

Da’Mon Blackshear was the only replacement opponent to have his result end in a draw. His fight was against Youssef Zalal.

Andre Fialho and Cody Brundage each appeared as replacement opponents twice. Fialho lost both fights (Jake Matthews, Muslim Salikhov). Brundage won one (Tresean Gore) and lost one (Michal Oleksiejczuk).

A total of two fighters in 2022 were originally short-notice fight card replacements but lost their opponent and, in turn, fought a fighter on short-notice.

  1. Cody Durden, UFC Vegas 63, October 29th. Durden stepped in on short-notice to fight Kleydson Rodrigues, but after Rodrigues was forced out, Durden ended up fighting short-notice Carlos Mota.
  2. Michal Oleksiejczuk, UFC Vegas, December 17th. Oleksiejczuk stepped in on short-notice to fight Albert Duraev, but after Duraev was forced out, Oleksiejczuk ended up fighting short-notice Cody Brundage.

A total of 13 fights in 2022 were changed and/or cancelled between the exact same two fighters more than once. Donald Cerrone vs. Joe Lauzon was the only pair to have THREE fights cancelled.
