ONE Championship’s big featherweight showdown on Friday, October 6, will have to wait. As South China Morning Post’s Nicolas Atkin first reported, Superbon Singha Mawynn withdrew from the ONE Fight Night 15 main event title tilt with ONE Featherweight Muay Thai World Champion Tawanchai PK Saenchai due to injury. ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong confirmed the news.
Muay Thai Title Fight Off at ONE Fight Night 15
Superbon got back in the win column in a big way in June. The former ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Champion rebounded from losing his title with a second-round head kick KO over Tayfun Ozcan. The Thai star announced his intent to get back in the title picture before getting the opportunity to square off with Tawanchai.
The injury that forced him off ONE Fight Night 15 occurred during training. Superbon reportedly injured his leg during a sparring session. However, he is not expected to be out for an extended period.
On Facebook Live, Sityodtong stated the company would seek a replacement for Superbon. There are also hopes the match could be re-booked later in 2023. Tawanchai is on a five-bout winning streak and is looking for the second successful title defense of his crown.
Tawanchai took the Muay Thai throne last September with a hard-fought decision win over Petchmorakot Petchyindee. In his first title defense, the Thai champion took out Jamal Yusupov with a leg kick in just 49 seconds. In his return to kickboxing, he broke Davit Kiria’s arm with another powerful kick.
If a replacement cannot be found, featherweights Thanh Le and Ilya Freymanov could be elevated to the main event. The ONE Interim Featherweight MMA World Title battle was announced earlier this month. In addition, Jonathan Di Bella defends the ONE Strawweight Kickboxing World Championship against Danial Williams, and Mikey Musumeci competes with Shinya Aoki in an openweight submission grappling contest.
