Nick Diaz suspended for 12 months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission

Nick Diaz finally appeared before the Nevada State Athletic Commission on Monday to determine his fate following his positive drug test for marijuana metabolites following his loss to Carlos Condit at UFC 143. Following back and forth deliberation between Diaz’ lawyer Ronald Goldman and NSAC officers, the Commission decided to hand Diaz a hefty suspension of a full 12 months. They also took 30% of his fight purse, as well as his fight bonus.

Most people feel like this suspension was quite harsh. Well that’s because it is, as Alistair Overeem was only suspended nine months due to his 14:1 increased T/E ratio and also tried to duck out of his tests. Chael Sonnen also only received six months after testing positive to elevated TRT following his UFC 117 loss.

However, many people fail to remember that this is the second time Diaz has tested positive for marijuana in Nevada. The first time was back in 2007, following his submission victory over Takanori Gomi. He was suspended for six months and fined 20-percent of his purse, as well as the fight was changed to a no-contest.
