Bryce Mitchell, who goes by the name of Thug Nasty, competed at UFC 249. Mitchell faced the more experienced Charles Rosa. Before the event, there was some animosity between the two fighters. They did not like each other or so it seemed.
Mitchell shot into the spotlight in December last year. In a fight against Matt Sayles (who had missed weight), Mitchell pulled off a submission win via the twister. The twister had been executed only once before in history, by none other than the Korean Zombie.

Why is the twister so rare? The submission has far too many steps. When you’re fighting in the UFC, you’re attempting this against elite athletes. The resulting tension from a twister is felt by the opponent in his neck, spine, shoulders, abdominal muscles and even all the way down to the knees. It’s one of the reasons perhaps no other submission has the same shock level. Even when it’s just attempted.
At UFC 249, Thug Nasty was on the verge of a second twister, multiple times. Mitchell’s performance was dominant. Quite a few times, it looked like it was the end for Rosa. So close in fact that Mitchell admitted that he was surprised with Rosa’s toughness. Rosa for his part told Mitchell that he was championship material.
Watch out for Thug Nasty
Mitchell’s last two performances have certainly merited talk of him being a future champion. The featherweight division is stacked. At the top is champion Alexander Volkanovski, along with contenders Max Holloway, Brian Ortega, the Korean Zombie, new entrant Edson Barbosa, Zabit Magomedsharipov and Yair Rodriguez. There is plenty of challenges ahead.
But if Mitchell gets past some of these guys he has all-star potential. Like so many other superstars, Mitchell marches to the beat of his own drum. The first order of business after his win was to call for his Camo shorts from Reebok.
