Fedor Emelianenko officially retires from MMA

It was heavily rumored prior to his fight today against Pedro Rizzo that “The Last Emperor” Fedor Emelianenko would retire from the sport of Mixed Martial Arts.

That rumor became a reality after knocking out Rizzo in just under 90 seconds.

Emelianenko made the announcement official following his victory,

I think it’s time. I’m retiring from sports. I still have the SAMBO World Championships. My family is the reason I will not be fighting again. My daughters are growing without their father, so it’s the right time to leave.

Fedor (34-4-1NC) spent the majority of his career in the Japan based PRIDE Fighting Championships. He held many titles, including WAMMA Heavyweight Championship, RINGS Openweight Championship and the PRIDE Heavyweight Championship to name a few.

Emelianenko went undefeated for nearly ten years, until Fabricio Werdum shocked the MMA world, when he submitted the Russian back in 2010. He then went on to lose his next two fights to Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and Dan Henderson.

Most fans would love to see “The Last Emperor” avenge his loss to Werdum, however there seems to be “No fantastic offer” that will take him out of retirment,

There’s no ‘fantastic’ offer that could tempt me out of retirement. I’m not obsessed with rematching Fabricio Werdum. There’s no agreement for such a fight, therefore there’s nothing to talk about.

Also in attendance at Fedor’s final fight was Russian president Vladimir Putin, who congratulated him on his victory,

I want to congratulate Fedor and thank him from all of us, martial arts fans,” Putin said; according to Russian news site RT.com. “It is because of him this sport became so popular in our country.

As Fedor leaves the sport of MMA, many fans and members of the media believe he is the greatest of all time. He will hang up his gloves with a very impressive record of 34-4-1NC.
