Sage Northcutt has spent over a year and a half recovering but now he is booked to return against acclaimed Japanese mixed martial artist Shinya Aoki. The fight is booked with One Championship and will take place on April 28th.
Shinya Aoki – A True Veteran
Shinya Aoki (46-9) is a longtime veteran of the sport making his professional debut in 2003. He has fought under the One Championship banner in 10 bouts. Shinya Aoki has fought notably fought Joachim Hansen in PRIDE, in addition to Caol Uno, Ben Askren, Hayato Sakurai, former UFC Champion Eddie Alvarez, Strikeforce Champion Gilbert Melendez, the legendary Kazushi Sakuraba, and an exhibition match with heavyweight great Fedor Emelianenko.
Shinya Aoki is black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a third-degree black belt in Judo and has won 30 of his fights via submission. Shinya Aoki is a controversial figure, known for his middle finger and breaking his opponent’s bones, and is considered one of the greatest Japanese MMA fighters of all time.
Return of Sage Northcutt
American born Sage Northcutt (11-3) is a karate based fighter and will looking forward to fighting again soon. His most recent match saw him in One Championship against Brazilian Cosmo Alexandre (8-1)(KB:42-15-1).
Alexandre won the contest against Sage Northcutt with a first-round knockout. Injuries sustained by Northcutt in this bout, 8 facial fractures, saw him put on the sidelines since May 2019. Northcutt previously fought under the UFC banner and went 6-2 in the organization. The split with the UFC was amicable, with the organization’s President Dana White saying, “Sage [Northcutt] is young, and Sage needs some work. Let him get some work in some other organizations, and we will see where this kid ends up in a couple of years. Maybe we will pick him back up again.”
It is a matchup of the young and hungry prospect looking to make his name against a veteran. Sage Northcutt is only 24 years old and will face the 37 year old Shinya Aoki. The younger American needs a victory on April 28th, it will be his first victory in One Championship.
