Nate Diaz will be making his return this weekend at UFC 263 when he takes on Leon Edwards in the fight right before the co-main event. Leon Edwards will likely be next in line for a title shot with a win this weekend. It is still questionable what will happen with Diaz if he wins though. Does Diaz get an immediate title shot? Does he fight another contender? Does he take another year or so off from fighting? Only time will be able to tell.
Nate Diaz (20-12)
Nate Diaz has not fought since he lost to Jorge Masvidal in 2019 for the BMF title. That was one of Diaz’s two fights in the last five years. The other fight was a unanimous decision over Anthony Pettis just a few months before the Masvidal fight. Nate Diaz has submitted his opponent in 11 of his 20 wins. Diaz has also been dealing with some scar tissue issues in his last few fights. Mainly referring to the cut above his eye getting so bad in the Masvidal fight that the doctor stopped the fight.
Nate Diaz has always been known to be a great boxer with great jiujitsu and an even better gas tank. The longer the fight goes on the more it normally favors Diaz. He has only been finished in three of his 12 losses and only one of those three losses was by submission. Diaz is a second-degree black belt in Jiujitsu under Cesar Gracie. He will come into this fight with Edwards with a slight two-inch reach advantage as well.
Leon Edwards (18-3-1)
Leon Edwards is only a purple belt in Brazillian Jiujitsu but has also been known to have a great gas tank. Edwards in 9-2 when the fight goes to a decision. He has also never been finished in his professional career. He only has two UFC losses and those losses were to Kamaru Usman and Claudio Silva. His only other loss was a disqualification loss to Delroy McDowell in 2012 due to an illegal knee. Edwards also holds the record for the second-fastest knockout in welterweight history.
In his last fight, Edwards accidentally poked Belal Muhammad in the eye and that fight ended in a no-contest. Prior to that fight, Edwards was on an eight-fight winning streak that included wins over Rafael Dos Anjos, Gunnar Nelson, and Donald Cerrone. Nine of Edwards’ 18 wins coming by way of finish. With six of those wins being knockouts and three being submissions.
