The December 11 UFC 269 event will add another fight to its list with Jorge Masvidal vs Leon Edwards. The two welterweight MMA fighters share a history and both will have something to fight for. UFC 269 will likely be headlined by a lightweight championship tilt with Charles Oliveira defending his title against top-ranked contender Dustin Poirier. But before we can get to the title clash we will have a three-round war with Jorge Masvidal vs. Leon Edwards.

Jorge Masvidal vs Leon Edwards was a match that was originally in discussion since early 2019. This was when the two welterweight gentlemen fought on the same UFC Fight Night London event and had a backstage brawl with each other. According to ‘Gamebred’ Jorge Masvidal, he gave ‘Rocky’ Leon Edwards, “three-piece and soda,” then added in a Tweet “You’re welcome #supernecessary.” Leon Edwards walked away from this confrontation with a cut on his cheek. Masvidal, at the time, was giving a post-fight interview, when Edwards called him out, Masvidal, on camera, then approached Edwards and threw a punch combination.
Cuban-American ‘Gamebred’ Jorge Masvidal has long been a staple in MMA. He first began his career in Kimbo Slice‘s backyard fights in Miami. He then fought in BODOG, Strikeforce, Bellator, he even fought at the Playboy Mansion, before finding his way to the UFC. Masvidal has grown into a major star with the UFC in the past few years noting his KO wins over Darren Till, Donald Cerrone, and his record-breaking flying knee knockout over Ben Askren. In November of 2019, Masvidal won a headline fight against Nate Diaz in which he won the BMF Title and was given this belt by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Since then Masvidal has fought for the welterweight crown twice, both attempts losing to champion Kamaru Usman.
With his extremely impressive winning streak in the UFC Jamaican-born Leon Edwards has nearly reached all of his goals in MMA, other than winning a title. The British fighter was on an eight-fight win-streak in the UFC against notable fighters such as former champion Rafael dos Anjos, Gunnar Nelson, Donald Cerrone, Bryan Barberena, Vicente Luque, and others. His only blemishes in the UFC are a loss to current champion Kamaru Usman and a No-Contest due to an eye poke against Belal Muhammad. Most recently Edwards out-struck Nate Diaz and defeated him via unanimous decision in a five-round fight, this was in June of 2021. In March of 2020, Leon Edwards was set to face former champion, Tyron Woodley, in a Fight Night event in London. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic cancellation, this bout was scrapped and never re-made.
With Jorge Masvidal vs Leon Edwards at UFC 269, both men will have plenty to fight for. Edwards is fighting for respect from the organization and is aiming for a welterweight title. He has been a top contender in the weight class for years and has never got his shot, even though he may have already earned it. Jorge Masvidal is a fighter who will be fighting for his pride and to keep his draw relevant. If he loses this bout he would be on a three-fight win streak which may tarnish the value of his name.

Poirier earned two TKO wins over Conor McGregor this year. Additionally, former champion Dominick Cruz is set to face top-ranked bantamweight Pedro Munhoz. Former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt will be dropping to flyweight and will be meeting Kai Kara-France. And Sean O’Malley will face Raulian Paiva, who is on a three-fight win streak.
