Road to the Pro’s w/ Micah Brakefield #21 – Signed first Pro Deal

My whole life, the only thing that I have truly desired, is to become a professional athlete. For a good portion of my childhood I had my eyes set on being a professional football player, but any chance of that happening ended when I shattered my leg in grade 11 playing rugby for my high school team. The doctors told me I would be unable to play sports for over a year. Of course, I was on the football field in less than 5 months, but my speed was gone. I knew that if I was going to continue with sports at the College level of athletics it was going to be as a wrestler.

For my senior year of high school I dedicated myself to the mats. I set my goals on becoming a national champion. The year started off great; I had won every tournament during the year including the Western Canadians, but was quickly knocked off my pedestal when I was pinned in my Provincial Finals by a guy I had beaten easily in the season. I went into the National Tournament re-focused and ready to go, but unfortunately after making it all the way to the finals without a point scored on me, I once again came up short losing a close final. I went on to wrestle the next 6 years with the Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club. I was in and out of College, and at times working full time, but the one thing that remained constant was I was training twice a day in the toughest sport in the world. Thanks to the coaches, I was even lucky enough to be taken on trips all over the Pacific North West, even when I wasn’t enrolled in school. Wrestling is a grind like no other, and the reason I know that I have what it takes to be a professional fighter.

Today it finally happened; I signed my first pro contract with Battlefield Fight League. It’s a 4 fight – one year deal with the first fight slated for November against TBA. As an amateur I have already fought in the BFL cage 7 times and know that I will be very comfortable stepping in there for my pro debut.  In my opinion, the top level ammys in Battlefield are very competitive against low-mid level pros, and having had a successful amateur stint, I feel more than ready for anyone Battlefield puts in front on my journey to the pro belt.

Well there you have it. As an amateur I was able to headline 4 cards, one of them was live on TV, and even have my highlights on Inside MMA a few times. Battlefield has been great to me thus far and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for me over the next year.

I’m sure these blogs will become much more regular again now that I am approaching the final exit on my “Road to the pro’s”.

I would like to thank my sponsors:  Tapout Canada, FVSTRDominant GroundReflex on KingswayDrakoPassion SportsTippet Richardson, Kombat NationKlench Kustom GuardsCanusa Fight Team, and of course MMASucka.
