“Talk is cheap,” Colby Covington Insults Khamzat Chimaev

The top UFC welterweights continue their insult and trash talk campaign. Colby Covington sent verbal barbs against Khamzat Chimaev. The former title challenger said that a match between himself and Chimaev would be unfair and should never be sanctioned. Covington’s comments were made during an interview, as he was eating ribs on Submission Radio.

Colby Covington Insults Khamzat Chimaev

‘Borz’ Khamzat Chimaev, the Russian-Swedish fighter, has fought flawlessly in his UFC and MMA career. Going a perfect 10-0 in MMA. In his four UFC wins Chimaev has absorbed merely one significant strike and has given 112 of his own. He has an impressive opening in the UFC and is considered an extremely hot prospect for 2022 and beyond.

“This kid was ready to give it up,” The outspoken and controversial welterweight Colby Covington did not hold back when speaking about Chimaev. “He was crying, he was retired, he was done. Off the common cold. So, I don’t make much of what the guy said.” This comment was made at Chimaev’s near retirement when he was suffering from COVID-19 earlier in 2021.

“Guys, I don’t think they can sanction that fight legally yet,” Covington continued speaking about fighting Chimaev, “I think that there’s such a discrepancy in the rankings. I mean, the guy hasn’t even beat anybody in the top 10 yet. I mean, I’ve been in the top 10 for five years now, beating champion after champion. So, I don’t even know if a commission would allow this fight to go through. But this fight, the only way it would look would just be complete domination. Colby Covington Incorporated just going out there and ending all that hype.”

Covington is a two-time UFC welterweight contender and a one-time interim champion and is extremely controversial. After insulting Brazil, former UFC Heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum threw a boomerang at him. Also, Covington is a huge Donald Trump supporter. And, like former US President Trump, Covington took some time to insult the media saying, “That same type of hype that all the clickbait journalists, all the MMA media out there put on Street Judas [Jorge] Masvidal. That same hype. They hype [Chimaev] up, they can’t stop talking about him, and everything’s about this kid, this hype, this hype, and then boom, it gets halted. So, it would get halted in a very violent way. And you don’t want to hurt a kid’s career before he even gets started. So, you send him up here, he’s never going to be the same person again.”

“Talk is cheap,” Covington said on the stagnant welterweight division, “Everyone is running their mouth these days, but I don’t see anybody actually doing something about it. [Chimaev] can say all these things and try and hype himself up and build himself up, but this is the same kid that was ready to retire, ready to quit and call it off the common cold – the common cold.”

“He’s a joke. He needs to beat someone worthy — someone in the top 5, someone in the top of the rankings, not just fight hand-picked people.” Covington said speaking to MMA Fighting earlier in the year. “What does he have, four UFC fights? The media loves to rush these kids and these hype jobs. This is fighting, man. People can get seriously hurt from rushing people like that.”

“He’s fighting a bunch of washouts. These are guys that he has been tailor-made to wrestle, take down and win,” Covington continued, “He hasn’t fought anybody inside the top 10, he hasn’t fought anybody who’s still in the UFC. I mean, his last fight, no one really knows who he fought. Who is that guy? I’ve never heard of that Chinese guy.

In November of 2021, ‘Borz’ Khamzat Chimaev responded to Covington’s attacks. On Twitter, Chimaev said, “Let’s go bitch fight with me [Covington] I will take your [heart] … Call the cops I’m coming for you,” and adds, “You do not represent USA, I represent USA, you represent cowardice.”
