MMASucka Podcast – UFC 272, Bellator, Taylor vs. Catterall and Much More

The latest MMASucka podcast is now live on Youtube and Spotify. With Tim Wheaton away this week, regular host, Frazer Krohn takes this solo episode to break down a busy weekend of combat sports as well as looking ahead to this weekend’s action.

Josh Taylor vs. Jack Catterall Controversy

Frazer breaks down the blockbuster, controversial Josh Taylor vs. Jack Catterall fight this weekend. Officially, Taylor retained his belts via split decision, however, it was clear for all to see that this was a clear robbery. Catterall clearly won the fight, landing the bigger shots, doing the cleaner work and ultimately outworking Taylor. He scored a knockdown in the eighth round and was seemingly cruising to victory when the final bell rang.

There has to be an inquiry into the judging of this fight and the understanding is that this will happen in the next few days.

UFC Vegas 49 and Bellator Dublin

UFC Vegas 49 saw Islam Makhachev dominate Bobby Green to a first-round TKO. Frazer believes that a title shot should be next for Makhachev and if not, a fight against Dustin Poirier makes the most sense. He then praises Arman Tsarukyan‘s stellar performance and highlights why he’s a problem at 155lbs.

Bellator Dublin also went down this weekend and Frazer discusses how it played out. He goes in-depth on Gegard Mousasi‘s big, dominant victory over Austin Vanderford and how there is a belief that Vanderford can go again and become middleweight champion… when Mousasi leaves the promotion. Whether Mousasi is one of the best middleweights on the planet and if not, who is in that conversation?

Leah McCourt suffered her first promotional loss at the hands of Sinead Kavanagh and the Bellator women’s featherweight division is scrutinised.

UFC 272

The epic UFC 272 card is broken down in detail, which is headlined by bitter rivals and former teammates, Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington. The two men have bad blood and this one is personal. Tactics, certain move sets, whether emotions will play a part and how Masivdal can get the better of Covington.

The co-main event sees two top lightweights, Rafael dos Anjos and Rafael Fiziev clash over five rounds. It will be the first time we see dos Anjos since November 2020 and the first time we get to see Fiziev over five rounds (if it goes that long) in the UFC. This one will prove if Fiziev has enough to clash with the elite at 155lbs or whether dos Anjos has anything left in the tank at 37 years old.

Edson Barboza and Bryce Mitchell clash at featherweight in a match-up of different styles. Barboza has elite stand-up, notching a huge 13 knockouts and has been in there with some of the very best there is. Mitchell prefers life on the ground and will face the toughest test of his career in Barboza.

Kevin Holland makes his welterweight debut against Alex Oliveira in what promises to be an exciting fight. The stand out on the prelims is Marina Rodriguez vs. Yan Xiaonan in what promises to be an all-action strawweight affair. Rodriguez is on the fridge of a title shot after three impressive victories in 2021 and Xiaonan will look to bounce back following her disappointing loss to Carla Esparza last time out.
