Poirier has expressed his desire to fight Diaz multiple times. He told Ariel Helwani in August that he and Diaz have “got to fight at some point.”
Poirier was also called out by Colby Covington on Saturday following “Chaos’s” unanimous decision win over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272. Masvidal is Covington’s former best friend and is currently a friend and training partner of Poirier’s at American Top Team. Poirier and Covington were once training partners, as well.
UFC President Dana White on Saturday said the odds on Diaz signing a new contract with the promotion were “very good,” but Diaz doubled down on retirement in his call-out of Poirier on Sunday.
Poirier is coming off a title loss to UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira. “The Diamond” had been riding a three-fight winning streak over Conor McGregor (x2) and Dan Hooker.
Diaz last dropped a unanimous decision to Leon Edwards, who could very well be next in line to fight Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title. Diaz’s most recent win was a decision over Anthony Pettis at UFC 241 in August 2019. He lost to Masvidal via doctor stoppage for the BMF belt at UFC 244 in November 2019.
Diaz holds a win of his own over McGregor when he submitted the former dual-weight champion at UFC 196 in March 2016. McGregor took a majority decision over Diaz at UFC 202 five months later. Many have been clamoring for a trilogy bout for the five-and-a-half years since the two last met, but Diaz downplayed it following McGregor’s broken leg injury against Poirier in their trilogy bout.
“Conor’s gonna have to get him some wins and prove he’s not so fragile first,” Diaz wrote on Twitter in response to White’s interview with TMZ.
