Compton’s “Black Ice” is as dangerous as they say

The news anchors from a classic “Key & Peele” sketch dished out a warning.

“You’ve gotta watch out for that dangerous black ice,” said the fictitious female news anchor.

She wasn’t referring to Bellator welterweight Joey Davis, but fighters would be wise to heed the warning as if it were meant about the electric grappler, because this “Black Ice” really is dangerous.

“I believe I’m the coldest mother f****r on the planet,” Davis said in an interview with Bellator earlier this year.

As dangerous as it gets

Undefeated in eight professional MMA fights, Davis stays winning. The elite grappler went 133-0 as a four-time NCAA Division 2 wrestling champion during his time at Notre Dame College in Ohio. Of his eight professional MMA victories, Davis has won five by knockout. One of his most impressive finishes came when he streamlined a vicious flying knee to the chin Jeff Peterson back in October 2019. The celebratory post-fight howls can still be heard echoing in the halls of the Pechanga Resort & Casino.

Friday night, Davis returns to that same venue, this time taking on “Jazzy” Jeff Creighton, a wrestler from Poway, Calif., making his Bellator debut. Creighton, who boasts an MMA record of 6-2-1, most recently scored a third-round knockout of Kenny Gaudreau at Stellar Fights 52 in October.

A return to the cage

Coming off a lengthy layoff, Davis, the pride of Compton, Calif., hasn’t fought since Nov. 2020, when he earned a unanimous decision victory over Bobby Lee at Bellator 253.

“Been waiting on ya,” commented former UFC champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson on the fight poster Davis shared earlier this month.

Davis might have been away from competition, but it will be remiss of Creighton to assume his opponent will suffer from any level of ring rust. Coached by Antonio McKee out of Team Bodyshop, Davis is constantly sharpening his skillset during training sessions with friend and former featherweight champion A.J. McKee.

Here to stay

A winning mindset combined with championship-level training has Davis in line to do great things in MMA. The sky’s the limit for Compton’s finest, and another impressive win Friday night will certainly help Davis crack the division Top 10 rankings to help him reach his ultimate goal.

“I want to be the next big thing, the next big star,” Davis said. “I’m going to be the champion.”

How long will Creighton be able to stay in this fight when “Black Ice” is lurking?
