UFC Vegas 101 Weigh-Ins: Undercard Competitors Exceed Nontitle Maximums

After a three-week break for the festive season, UFC Vegas 101 is set to take place on Saturday night. Friday morning in Las Vegas, the official weigh-ins for this weekend’s card took place. MMA‘s leading organization has its main event locked in following the weigh-in.

Dern and Ribas On Weight for UFC Vegas 101 Main Event

The headlining bout for Saturday night’s show will proceed without any issue. Both Mackenzie Dern (14-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC) and her opponent, Amanda Ribas (13-5 MMA, 7-4 UFC) met the strawweight maximum of 116 lbs at the first time of asking. The UFC Vegas 101 main event is a rebooking of a cancelled fight between these two from UFC Tampa a month ago.

It wouldn’t be a UFC weigh-in without a face-off between the two combatants in the main event of the evening. Friday’s event was no exception. After Dern and Ribas weighed in for the UFC Vegas 101 headliner, the women put up their dukes for a photo-op.

Thankfully, security wasn’t needed as the situation didn’t escalate from there. The weigh-ins weren’t without their problems on Friday, however.

Two Undercard Fighters Exceed Allowable Weights Ahead of UFC Vegas 101

All main card fighters for tomorrow’s card made their allowable weights without issue. A couple of fighters failed to make their contracted weights during the weigh-ins this morning.

Both snafus occurred at the top of the undercard for UFC Vegas 101. Ihor Potieria (21-7 MMA, 2-5 UFC), booked to appear during the co-featured prelim against Marco Tulio (12-1 MMA, UFC promotional debut) at middleweight, officially weighed in at 188 lbs, 2 lbs over the nontitle maximum of 186 lbs.

This co-featured prelim will take place as scheduled, but Potieria’s wallet is going to be a tad bit lighter, surrendering 25 percent of his pay for the contest. The featured prelim, a flyweight division contest between Jose Johnson (16-9 MMA, 1-2 UFC) and Felipe Bunes (13-7 MMA, 0-1 UFC) also had a hiccup, with the former exceeding the nontitle maximum of 126 lbs at 128 1/2 lbs. Johnson will surrender 20 percent of his pay as a result.
