Dana White: “If I had to go out on limb, Weidman’s going to get that shot”

The number one contender for Anderson Silva’s middleweight championship has been a toss up for the past month or so. Many fans and critics think that the undefeated Chris Weidman should get the next shot. Then when Rashad Evans came out of the woodwork and said he wanted to fight Silva for his title, UFC President Dana White said he would have to wait until after UFC 156 to see who was next.

Well, UFC 156 is now a thing of the past and Evans lost his co-main event fight in boring fashion at the hands of Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

Speaking with Ariel Helwani for FUEL TV, White said that if he had to go out on a limb then Weidman would be next.

“If I had to go out on limb right here, right now and say it, I would say yes Weidman’s going to get that shot.”

If you know anything about White and the UFC brass, nothing is guaranteed and when he says Weidman will get the shot, we will have to wait and see. More than likely the team of Joe Silva, Sean Shelby and White will head back to UFC headquarters and take it from there.

Weidman (9-0) has gone 5-0 inside the Octagon. Most recently he defeated Mark Munoz with a nasty elbow at this past July’s UFC on FUEL TV event. The elbow won the New York native knockout of the night honors.

He was expected to take on Tim Boetsch at UFC 155 this past December, however he was forced to withdraw from the bout due to a shoulder injury. In an interview on The MMA Hour Weidman made it clear that he wants to fight Silva and he is aiming for a June return.
