SFL 16: The Aftermath, Results, News and More

India’s premier Mixed Martial Arts promotion, the Super Fight League, returned to Mumbai this past Friday for its 16th installment, and showcased a stellar fight card that produced some great finishes and match-ups.

SFL 16: The Aftermath

In the featured bout of the evening, BJJ specialist Sascha Sharma locked horns with 20-year-old MMA prospect, Marca Gomez Sariol.  Sharma used his grappling and control on the canvas en route to earning a Unanimous decision win over the young Spaniard.

The co-main event saw Lena Ovchynnikova snap her losing streak under the SFL banner with an unorthodox Guillotine Choke submission victory over Indian-born Fathia Mostafa. The former managed to utilize her Muay Thai in the early exchanges, before locking in the aforementioned choke just past the mid-way point of the 1st stanza.

Other notable fights:

In what was an explosive encounter, fans in attendance were on their feet and gave a standing ovation to both Irfan Khan and Sachin Panwar. Both fighters put on an incredible fight for the audience, and would have definitely garnered ‘Fight of the Night’ honors. Irfan Khan pressured his opponent throughout the fight and was unlucky to have not earned a stoppage victory. Sachin Panwar, on the other hand, showed lots of heart  by escaping his opponent’s near submission attempts, and moving forward.

Amit Thapa put on a beastly performance with a TKO win over Sandeep Kumar. Following a takedown, Thapa had two Americana submission attempts before gaining full mount. He then started raining down punches and forced a referee’s stoppage in controversial circumstances. There wasn’t any complaints from Sandeep Kumar, however, after the stoppage, but many felt that the official had stopped the fight too early.
