The contest opened with Butler landing lots of effective leg kicks. And in a surprise turn of events, it was Sylvain Potard who landed a takedown, but Butler managed to recover and proceeded to push Potard up against the cage. Butler soon landed his first takedown of the fight, but as he transitioned to take Potard’s back, he lost position giving Potard a momentary advantage. But the American, as resilient as ever, gave no opportunities for his opponent to mount an offense, as the round came to a close. Potard couldn’t get his striking going at all in the first round.

In the second round, however, the tides turned for Potard as he capitalized on some heavy punches while going for a takedown, forcing a referee’s stoppage when Butler looked to be completely out of the contest.
Potard, the underdog heading into this bout, hence gained an upset victory. Butler was the heavy favorite heading into this one.
