Alistair Overeem vs. Ben Rothwell added to UFC Fight Night 50

USA Today

UFC Fight Night 50 continues to be bolstered by former Strikeforce champions. Former light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi will be fighting Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in the main event. Now the co-main event will feature former heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem (37-13) against the returning Ben Rothwell (33-9).

Despite being unranked and failing his post-fight drug test at UFC 164, Rothwell has been awarded with a surprising matchup agains Overeem. It was confirmed by Fox Sports.com that this will take place to bolster their Friday night event in Connecticut. Overeem is coming off a dominant victory over Frank Mir at UFC 169 and has began training at Greg Jackson’s camp. So far, he is enjoying the switch and is confident that will be his camp for many fights to come.

Rothwell is coming off a third round knockout over Brandon Vera at UFC 164. It was a much-improved performance from Rothwell by showcasing more fluid striking and better cardio. Although that seems to be negated by testing positive for elevated testosterone levels, Joe Silva seemed willing to match him up against one of the top ten heavyweights in the world. Rothwell and Overeem will be looking for their first two-fight win streak in the UFC.
