Lyoto Machida vs. Luke Rockhold in the works for late 2014

A middleweight fight between contenders Lyoto Machida vs. Luke Rockhold is in the works for a late 2014 card.

UFC fighter and FOX analyst said that they have agreed to fight each other on Wednesday, August 20th’s episode of the UFC’s official news show, UFC Tonight.  An event that makes sense is UFC 179, which takes place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in late October.

Machida is currently ranked at #2 in middleweight, and Rockhold is close behind at #5.

Machida last fought for the title against champion Chris Weidman but was unsuccessful.  They put on an entertaining 5 round show that went the distance at UFC 175 on July 5th.  This was Weidman’s 2nd title defense, the first against Anderson Silva last December.

Rockhold last fought on the main card of UFC 172, headlined by light heavyweight champion Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira last April.  He submitted Tim Boestch in the first round.
