ROAD FC 017 Results: A Sol Kwon garners vacant Lightweight strap

South Korea’s ROAD Fighting Championship promotion held its 17th installment this past weekend, August 17, at the Seoul Olympic Hall in Seoul. The entire event streamed on Epicentre.tv as part of a recently forged partnership.

The running order featured a total of nine bouts, highlighted by a Lightweight title tussle between A Sol Kwon (19-8) and Takasuke Kume (16-4-4).

Kwon had been making headlines in his previous appearances for the outfit, particularly for his inability to make weight. The 29-year-old finally made the 155-lbs limit on this occasion, however, and evaded ROAD FC’s punitive consequences.

Kume, meanwhile, entered the tussle with a win under his belt, following back-to-back losses in title match-ups against current UFC starlet, Nam Yui Chul.

Kume surprised the masses with his striking, initiating the early exchanges en route to setting up his trademark takedowns. But Kwon’s defensive prowess paved the way for ground-and-pound from top position, and that eventually favored him on the judges’ scorecards. After three thrilling rounds of action, Kwon had his hands raised and was declared as the promotion’s new Lightweight champion.

In another featured bout of the evening, popular ROAD FC ring girl, Song Ga-Yeon (1-0), made her highly anticipated pro MMA debut opposite Japan’s Emi Yamamoto (0-1). Song’s dominance in the clinch allowed her to take her opponent down at will with a series of Judo throws. Thereafter, Song’s numerous unanswered punches from mount forced the referee to draw a halt to the contest at the 2:23 mark.
