UFC Fight Night 50: What’s next for main card losers?

UFC Fight Night 50, as expected, turned out to be a fun night of fights. The event started out slow with a couple of unanimous decisions and one controversial decisions. Slowly but surely, the fights picked up the pace and ended up being all finishes after the three decisions. Overall UFC Fight Night 50 was a good night of fights and lived up to expectations, which were high due to a stacked Fight Night card.

UFC Fight Night 50 took place at Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, CT on Sept. 5, 2014. It aired live on FOX Sports 1 in the U.S. and streamed live on UFC Fight Pass in Canada.

In the highly anticipated main event, Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza was expected to defeat fellow top middleweight Gegard Mousasi, and he did handily by submission. Jacare was dominant in every area for the first two rounds, until he submitted (guillotine choke) Mousasi. In the co-main event, Alistair Overeem, although a high favourite going into the fight, he was questioned by many fans because of his known weak chin, took on non-ranked Ben Rothwell. His chin didn’t serve him well tonight, as he was stopped in the first round by TKO. Also on the main card, Matt Mitrione made quick work of Derrick Lewis and Joe Lauzon defeated Michael Chiesa due to Doctor’s Stoppage. Chiesa had a very deep cut on his eyebrow which caused the fight to be ended, which indeed was the right decision.

So with that, it’s time for MMASucka.com to play matchmaker again, and unlike always, we will decide who the main card losers should fight next in our opinion. If you have a different opinion, let us know in the comment section below.

Let’s get started!

Name: Michael Chiesa (11-2)

Who he should face next: Jamie Varner (21-10)

Michael Chiesa did indeed put on an amazing performance at UFC Fight Night 50 against Joe Lauzon, as he earned a Fight of the Night $50,000 bonus but he got tagged and suffered a deep cut on his eyebrow, causing the doctor to step in. He has called for a rematch against Lauzon as he says he was far from beat, but here at MMASucka.com we think differently. We would like to see him square off against Jamie Varner. Varner is riding a 3 fight losing streak, and now Chiesa is also in the lose column. Both are exciting fighters and could make for a good fight for sure. Chiesa will have to recover from his cut, but Varner suffered an ankle injury at UFC 173 so it would likely line up pretty nicely.

Name: Derrick Lewis (11-3)

Who he should fight: Ruan Potts (8-3)

After he picked up first round stoppages in his first two UFC fights, Derrick Lewis rather than picking up another first round finish, he was knocked out in the first round himself. Fellow heavyweight Ruan Potts is coming off a dominant loss to Anthony Hamilton at UFC 177 just a little over a week ago. Although Potts was also unsuccessful in his debut, the winner between Lewis vs. Potts could get back into the win column.

Name: Alistair Overeem (37-14, 1NC)

Who he should fight: Retirement

Alistair Overeem, the owner of a 2-3 record in the UFC, has proved lots outside of the UFC. Holding belts in K-1, Strikeforce, and DREAM, you can’t call him unsuccessful in his MMA and kickboxing career. The only thing that is missing is a UFC championship, and he possibly had his last chance at the run at the belt last Saturday, but instead failed and got knocked out by Ben Rothwell. At least to me, it seems like the more and more times he has gotten knocked out, his chin has gotten worse. It really seemed like in his bout that his chin just couldn’t hold up at all anymore. Your head can’t take shots forever. It’s time for him to hang up his gloves and call it a career. Although he has shown no interest in retiring yet, and if that’s the case, a bout against Brendan Schaub makes the most sense.

Name: Gegard Mousasi

Who he should fight next: Loser of Tim Kennedy vs. Yoel Romero at UFC 178

Gegard Mousasi, who has had mixed success in his past few fights, definitely still deserves to be considered a top fighter at middleweight and deserves a top opponent. He lost to #2 ranked Ronaldo Souza, but was expected to. Although he isn’t in “the mix” for the title right now, he could get back in track against the loser of Tim Kennedy vs. Yoel Romero, who fight at UFC 178 later this month.
