UFC 179: Dishin’ Out the Dolla – Fight Bonuses

At each and every event the UFC hands out $50,000 to four lucky bonus winners. They are usually two for ‘Fight of the Night’ and two for ‘Performance of the Night’.

We have decided to give out our own bonuses. We may not dish out every one, but we will tell you if we don’t agree with what the UFC has decided on.

UFC 179: Dishin’ Out the Dolla – Fight Bonuses

This is the UFC 179 edition of ‘Dishin’ Out the Dolla’.

MMASucka’s bonuses

Fight of the Night: Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes
Performance of the Night: Gilbert Burns
Performance of the Night: Wilson Reis

We agree on three out of four bonuses that were handed out by the UFC.  The UFC decided to give the main card winner Fabio Maldonado a Performance of the Night bonus for his second round TKO victory, but we disagree with that for a couple reasons.  First off, Maldonado in the first round really didn’t look all that great.  The only place he has a chance at winning is on the feet, which is where the majority of the first five minutes of the fight were not spent.  His opponent, Hans Stringer took him down early on in the round and kept him down for a while.  Maldonado looked very bad on his back, and easily lost the first round.  Maldonado is usually a very exciting fighter, and considering the first portion of the fight was not exciting, how does he deserve a bonus?  Yes, he went into the second round and eventually picked up the win, but that doesn’t matter, in my opinion.  This is a PERFORMANCE bonus, and he performed poorly in most of the fight!

Wilson Reis submitted Scott Jorgensen in the first round, and was never in trouble, really didn’t get hit that much, considering the fight didn’t last long at all.  Often times the quicker the finish the more likely you are to pickup a bonus check, and you usually can’t look bad, which makes complete sense.  It was pretty obvious that Maldonado, despite picking up the TKO victory, didn’t deserve the extra cash due to the first round.

For those reasons, we believe that Reis was more dominant at UFC 179 and deserved the extra fifty grand, but it’s not our call.  What are your thoughts on the bonuses given out tonight?

Check back here in a couple of weeks for the next edition of ‘Dishin’ Out the Dolla’, following UFC Fight Night 55 & 56, which take place on Nov. 7 and 8, respectively.
