Fight Boozin’: UFC 185 edition

Now, for those of us over the legal drinking age, alcoholic beverages are often a necessary accoutrement when watching a UFC pay-per-view event. However, with such a wide range of beers, wines, and spirits available, it can sometimes be difficult to choose something that may really fit the event. That can leave you relying on the “same old same old,” or – even worse – cheap, bad beer. We here at MMASucka don’t want to see that happen to you, though. That’s why we’re bringing you this PPV-week series to help ensure that you have quality drinks for watching (hopefully) quality fights, inspired by a fighter on the card.

It’s UFC 185 time, and for this week’s Fight Boozin’, we’re going to go to the undercard. Why? Because there’s a pair of eastern Canadians fighting there, Elias Theodorou and Sam Stout. While they’re fighting out of Ontario, we’re going to go next door to Quebec to find this week’s suds. This is the beer that got me started on the craft beer kick, Unibroue’s La Fin du Monde. That’s French for “The End of the World,” if you didn’t know.

La Fin du Monde is a golden ale styled after a Belgian tripel, which means it’s not too bitter and packs a punch not unlike the aforementioned Stout and Theodorou. This plus-sized beauty – it comes in a 750 ml bottle – clocks in at 9.0% ABV, but with only 19 IBU. That means that it’s easy-drinking in addition to being able to hit your liver like Bas Rutten. Something else that you may notice is that the beer itself is slightly cloudy, as opposed to transparent. This is due to the fact that it’s bottle-conditioned, with an extra shot of yeast put directly into the beer after it’s been bottled to help raise the ABV and allow the brew to age in a manner similar to wine. Unibroue is not forthcoming about the hops and malts it uses, but I can tell you that beer has a hint of spiciness to it, with tastes of coriander and orange peel involved. Other than that, all I have left to add is buy a bottle for the prelims and one for the main card, then don’t make any other plans for the night.

Unibroue’s La Fin du Monde is available in 750 ml bottles, complete with an old-school corked top. You can check Unibroue’s website to find it in your area.
