A bantamweight rematch has been scrapped — thanks to the injury bug.
UFC champion T.J. Dillashaw was set to headline UFC 186 next month against former titleholder Renan Barao in an anticipated rematch. The two elite mixed martial artists met for the first time at UFC 173 last May. Dillashaw dominated then-champ Barao to win the belt, in shocking fashion.
T.J. Dillashaw out of UFC 186 with injured rib, fight with Renan Barao scrapped
The StarPhoenix initially reported that Dillashaw was forced to pull out of the main event slot due to a fractured rib. UFC officials confirmed this later, on Tuesday afternoon.
Barao was also pulled from the card.
With the change, the second title fight planned for the event, Demetrious Johnon vs. Kyoji Horiguchi for the flyweight strap, has been pushed to the main event slot. Taking its place in the co-main, is ‘Rampage’ Jackson vs. Fabio Maldonado. Now, Abel Trujillo vs. John Makdessi will open up the pay-per-view portion of the card.
Dillashaw’s recovery time is expected to be six weeks.
UFC 186 takes place live from the Bell Center in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on April 25.
