UFC Fight Night in San Diego gets it’s first fight as Tony Ferguson looks to make it six wins in a row vs. former Strikeforce champion Josh Thomson.
The fight was announced during America’s Pregame on FOX Sports 1 on Monday.
Ferguson (18-3) has been on fire since returning from injury in late 2013 having won five in a row against increasingly difficult opposition. During this five-fight stretch, the TUF 13 winner has three submissions, one knockout and one decision win. He picked up post-fight bonuses following his first round submission wins over Mike Rio and Gleison Tibau, the latter being on February 28 of this year.
Thomson (20-7, 1NC) has yet to pick up a win since knocking out Nate Diaz in mid-2013. He is coming off two rather controversial split decision losses to Bobby Green and Benson Henderson, the latter being a title fight. Thomson was briefly linked to a fight against Ross Pearson on this San Diego card just days before this announcement was made.
This bouts placement on the card is unknown at this time, but it being on the main card is a given.
UFC Fight Night 72 will be held at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, California on July 15. no other bouts have been announced for the card as of writing this.
