Tony Ferguson vs. Anthony Pettis official for UFC 229

A new fight has been announced for UFC 229.

Former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson will square off against former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis at this event taking place on October 6th from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight’s announcement was broke tonight from an anonymous source, as stated by MMAJunkie. No official confirmation has been made from the UFC. The card’s headliner will feature a highly anticipated lightweight bout between current UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and the return of former two-division champion Conor McGregor.

Ferguson last stepped into the octagon in October of 2017, winning the interim lightweight belt by submission in the third round over top contender Kevin Lee. Despite later being stripped, the victory stretched his win streak to 10-straight with six post-fight bonuses in his last six appearances.

Pettis has had many highs and lows in recent fights, now hosting a 3-5 record in his last eight since losing the lightweight belt to Rafael dos Anjos in March of 2015. This fight will be his second of the year, as he defeated Michael Chiesa at UFC 226 in July by submission.

Two championship fights and two-non championship fights had been attempted between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson. The fights were never able to fall through, and now the both are scheduled to face off against different opponents at the same event. If Nurmagomedov or McGregor were to get injured or suffer an issue leading up to this event, Ferguson will be present as a potential candidate to keep a strong main event in tact.

Here is a look at the current UFC 229 card.
