The ADCC, the world’s number one submission grappling association released the draws for the 2022 World Championships on Friday evening ahead of this weekend’s tournaments at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
One of the most prestigious grappling events of the year, ADCC 2024 will feature five male divisions, three female divisions, and two super fights involving 2022’s Super Fight champion Gordon Ryan. Ryan is first slated to face off with Felipe Pena on Saturday, before taking on Yuri Simoes on Sunday. Simoes earned the right to face Ryan in a super fight at this year’s ADCC’s by becoming the Absolute champion back in 2022.

Men’s Divisions
-66kg Division

With so many would-be contenders competing in the Craig Jones Invitational, opportunity knocks for several new and familiar ADCC faces. That said, a man by the name of Diego or Diogo will be heavily favored to bring home the gold medal in the -66kg division. Diego Pato (+145) took home the bronze in 2022, and finds himself slightly favored over 2022 champion Diogo Reis (+190) to earn the gold in this year’s competition. Underdogs Fabricio Andrey (+400) and Ethan Crelinston (+600), however, are also solid bets to make some noise in an otherwise wide open -66kg bracket.

Though Danaher Death Squad product and fan favorite Garry Tonon has seen high levels of success in the world of grappling and dabbled with success in mixed martial arts, ADCC dominance has always alluded him. With a depleted field in 2024, this year would figure to be the year Tonon finds his way to an ADCC final, but he will find that hard to come by with Mica Galvao (-125), one of the biggest favorites in any division, on his side of the bracket. The 20-year-old Galvao, then just 18, silvered at ADCC 2022, coming up short against Kade Ruotolo in the -77kg final. If not Galvao, Tonon will find stiff competition in the form of trendy underdogs plays like PJ Barch and Oliver Taza.
JT Torres and Vagner Rocha will be favored on the other side of the draw.
-88kg Division

Giancarlo Bodoni enters the -88k competition as the defending champion, and is coming off a monster ADCC 2022 where he defied expectations and may have had an Absolute division run in him had he not run into Nicholas Meregali. He checks in as a +135 favorite to repeat. Pedro Marinho (+300) and Izaak Michell (+350) could also make some noise as the two two favorites on the other side of the bracket. Also don’t count out Jay Rodriguez, whose brother Nick advanced through to the semifinals of the Craig Jones Invitational on Friday and should be a heavy favorite to win the +80kg division with Victor Hugo out of the picture.

The biggest male favorite at ADCC 2024 rests in the -99kg division in Nicholas Meregali (-150). Meregali is the total package and a man who has established himself as one of the best grapplers in the world behind marquee names such as Gordon Ryan. The 30-year-old Meregali had a busy 2022, finishing third in this division and as the Absolute Division runner-up behind Yuri Simoes, in addition to executing the tournament’s “Best Throw.” His legend will only continue to grow if he can add ADCC gold to his collection. 2022 champion Kaynan Duarte (+250), who beat Craig Jones in that final, is most likeliest to win should things not go Meregali’s way.

The heaviest male division at ADCC should feature plenty of familiar faces to grappling fans despite notable omissions in Gordon Ryan and teammate Nicky Rodriguez. South Africa’s Luke Griffith finds himself the favorite take down the gold medal at +155, but the +99kg division is otherwise open for business with name fighters like Felipe Pena (+200), Big Daniel Manasoiu (+400), Roosevelt Sousa (+400), and crafty vet Vinny Magalhaes (+900) all vying for the crown. Pena will also have his hands full with Gordon Ryan in one of Ryan’s two superfights this weekend.

-55kg Division

The women’s -55kg division is arguably the most open division in this year’s ADCC. An argument could be made for any of the eight women to come out of the tournament a newly-minted champion, and this will also be the first time ADCC has crowned a -55kg champion. The big names to watch will be Bianca Basilio and Mayssa Bastos, but after that it’s seemingly anyone’s competition with names like Adele Fornarino, Jasmine Rocha and Ana Rodrigues vying for the crown.
-65kg Division

Helena Crevar (even odds) is the biggest favorite in any women’s draw this year, and if that’s a name that looks familiar to you, it’s because she is a budding star in jiu-jitsu and at just 17 years old became the youngest to ever qualify for ADCC’s. She will now have to answer for the hype in her first-ever world championship run, and has 2022 silver medalist Brianna Ste-Marie (+400) out of Canada in her half of the draw. On the other side, 2022 bronze medalist Bia Mesquita (+200) will be favored to reach the final but could be challenged by another young star in Amanda Leve (+900) or Ana Carolina Vieira (+1200).
+66kg Division

The +66kg will have some interest subtext this year. Firstly, the draw will have a notable omission in Gabi Garcia, who will instead be grappling Craig Jones in an intergender main event tomorrow night at the Thomas and Mack Center. That said, Garcia did not win the 2022 draw. That honor would belong to Amy Campo, who defeated Elisabeth Clay, Garcia, and Rafaela Guedes consecutively to win the gold. Campo is back as a +140 favorite to repeat, and Guedes should also be considered a favorite at +200. Kendall Reusing put herself in a position to medal by making the semifinals at ADCC 2022, but suffered a non-contact knee injury against Guedes that ended her tournament. She is back to 100% at this year’s ADCC, and if she can do what the Injury Gods prevented her from doing last year and overcome Campo and Guedes, it could be one of the stories of the weekend.
