Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix to Continue

Bellator announced on Thursday that the Bellator featherweight grand prix will continue following a pause during the coronavirus pandemic. Three fights have been scheduled between two different events as part of the tournament.

Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix Continues

Bellator 252 is set to take place in November, and that card will feature two fights from the Bellator featherweight grand prix. The main event will be a quarterfinal matchup between current featherweight champion Patrico Freire and challenged Pedro Carvalho. “Pitbull” will be defending his title while also looking to advance in the tournament. Carvalho would become champion and move onto the semifinals with a win.

The other grand prix fight scheduled for Bellator 252 is a contest between Daniel Weichel and Emmanuel Sanchez. That fight is expected to serve as the co-main event of the evening. The winner of that fight will square off with the winner of Freire vs. Carvalho at a later date. Bellator also announced a fight between prospect Aaron Pico and John de Jesus. Pico is looking to win his third straight fight, while de Jesus is looking to build on momentum from a successful Bellator debut. That fight is not in the grand prix.

At Bellator 253, Darrion Caldwell will take on AJ McKee in the main event. That will be the first semifinal matchup in the featherweight grand prix. Caldwell, the former Bellator bantamweight champion, will be attempting to secure a chance to become a two-weight champion. McKee will be no easy task for the former champion, though. He has never lost in his MMA career, holding a professional record of 16-0 with 11 finishes. That will be a phenomenal fight and the winner will have a real shot of dethroning the champion in the finals of the Bellator featherweight grand prix. Hopefully, this tournament will be successful in building some starts in the promotion’s featherweight division.
