When you ask a fighter what their overall goal is – the vast majority of them will say, “to become the champion.” For UFC lightweight Bobby Green that is actually the last thing on his checklist.
Bobby Green fighting to get paid, not the title
In his last outing, Green had the toughest test of his five-year mixed martial arts career. He took on Pat Healy on the preliminary portion of the UFC on FOX 9 fight card and made “Bam Bam” look like a complete amateur. He toyed with him on the feet – having his hands at his hips a lot of the fight and when Healy looked to take him down, he stuffed that at will.
It was part of my game-plan. I really don’t have a game-plan, but people were saying I was a ‘nut-kicker’ and talking trash so I felt like I didn’t really make the call and “Big John” McCarthy was the ref, so people were making me out to be the bad guy. I said I wasn’t going to kick at all, so when I said that I wanted to show I could do this. I wanted to show my skills, I wasn’t really trying to disrespect Pat or anything, I just wanted to show where I am at with my skill level. To show that I am top-10 worthy.
Many websites predicted that Green would take on Joe Lauzon following their UFC on FOX 9 victory, however “King” will now face “Blackzillan” fighter Abel Trujillo at UFC 169 in February. Green was able to check out Trujillo’s last fight against Roger Bowling, as it was on the same fight card as his and he was very blunt about it.
It was interesting. Style’s make fights and I’ll be interested to see how his style works against my style.
As I mentioned, Green has a different motive from most that enter the Octagon. He is not fighting for championship gold, instead he is fighting to put a roof over his son’s head.
For me I feel like getting the number of fights up to get my cheque higher. I’m trying to get enough money to purchase a house, have my house paid off and have some money for my account. That’s my goal – to make sure my son has a roof over his head.
If that is obtained, then the next logical goal will be the title. Well, Green is so level-headed that if that happens it happens; he is just happy to be fighting for the UFC.
Possibly if that comes along with it, that’s cool. I’m just blessed to be here as it is, I never thought I’d be beating top-10 guys in the world and stuff. One day I can tell my son that – If that happens cool, if not, as long as I can keep trying to press towards the title.
Green will take on Trujillo on February 1, 2014 at the Prudential Center at Newark, N.J.
