Canelo vs Crawford. The fight that could potentially be the biggest fight possible in boxing today will go down from the Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas. It marks the first Zuffa boxing card to be promoted by UFC president Dana White under the TKO banner, exciting times for boxing fans.
The mega-star, Saul Canelo Alvarez, holds an incredible record of 63–2–2. He’s the reigning and, importantly, defending undisputed super middleweight champion.
Standing across from the Mexican is the undefeated Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford, a man with a record of 41-0. He’s the former light welterweight and welterweight undisputed world champion, can fight out of both stances and has dominated everyone he’s faced.
Canelo vs Crawford – The Questions to Ask
Ahead of the mega Canelo vs Crawford bout this weekend, there are plenty of questions to ask.
Firstly, what will Crawford look like at 168lbs? He’s the man moving up from his natural division, welterweight to super middleweight. Bud is used to fighting at 147lbs, however, will be fighting up at 168lbs. Last time out, Crawford took on Israil Madrimov at super welterweight (154lbs), the heaviest he’s weighed throughout his career.
Secondly, can Canelo catch Crawford and if so, what impact will it have on him? We’ve never seen Crawford dropped, we’ve never seen him really hurt and never seen him massively tested. Although it appeared that Egidijus Kavaliauskas had dropped him back in 2019, it was deemed a slip. Canelo has recorded 39 knockouts across his 63 wins and will be the hardest hitter the American has ever faced. If Canelo lands, will Crawford drop?
Finally, have we seen the best of Canelo Alvarez? In recent fights, he’s not looked his old, vicious, dominant self. The run that he went on from 2018-2021, from the Gennadiy Golovkin trilogy bout up to his Dmitry Bivol outing, was legendary. Notching five knockouts in eight fights, taking three undefeated records and dominating each fight, Canelo looked like he could do whatever he wanted with his opponents.
Since the Bivol loss, however, he’s slowed down. He hasn’t finished a fight since 2021. Gone to a decision on five straight occasions against much lesser opposition than he’s previously fought and not looked anywhere near the killer that he has previously. Is father time catching up with Canelo? Only time will tell.
