Welterweight Delivers Scathing Remarks on Paul’s Miami Fight

Colby Covington has proven himself to be a lightning rod for explosive and controversial comments both in and out of the fabled Octagon. Like many people the world over, Covington spent his Friday night watching the fight between Jake Paul and Anthony Joshua.

The contest, held inside Kaseya Center, the home arena of the NBA’s Miami Heat, was a scheduled eight-round pugilism contest. As the fight reached its later rounds, it became one-way traffic for the latter.

In the sixth round of the advertised eight, Anthony Joshua uncorked a right-handed punch to send Jake Paul to the canvas. For his trouble, “The Problem Child”  had broken his jaw in the fight and needed to undergo surgery over the past weekend, resulting in the Florida Boxing Commission giving him a mandatory suspension for the foreseeable future.

Colby Covington Dishes Out Pain in Fiery YouTube Commentary

True to his form, Colby Covington took to YouTube on Sunday to offer up remarks on the Paul vs. Joshua fight in a manner that only he can. Spoiler alert: The man nicknamed “Chaos” didn’t hold back.

“Well, that one wasn’t scripted!” began Colby Covington. “And if it was, Anthony Joshua never got the script!” Covington’s remarks only continued from there.

“This fight reminded me of that episode of Jackass where Johnny Knoxville had a boxing match with Butterbean in the department store. People tuned into see if Jake was dumb enough to actually go through with getting mangled by a heavyweight boxer, and just like Johnny Knoxville, Jake delivered in embarrassing Jackass fashion.”

Jake Paul Faltered When Lights Were Brightest Friday

In the past, Jake Paul has squared off against opponents whose athletic peak occurred in his youth, or, in the case of a widely-publicized 2024 exhibition versus Mike Tyson, before he was alive. Comparatively, Anthony Joshua (29-4, 26 KOs) is still very much a quasar in boxing’s heavyweight ranks.

Ahead of Friday’s fight with Jake Paul (12-2, 7 KOs), Anthony Joshua’s career highlights included a gold medal-winning performance at super-heavyweight in the London Summer Olympics in 2012 and a reign as the IBF and WBO Heavyweight Champion and as the WBA Super-Heavyweight Champion. Getting back to Colby Covington’s comments in the YouTube video, he made reference to Paul’s past work on cable television.

“Jake didn’t prove he was really tough or a real boxer,” he remarked. “He just proved he’s really stupid! [I] can’t believe people actually bet on a Disney Channel kid to beat an Olympic gold medalist and world heavyweight champion. That whole show was an embarrassment!”

To close his brief commentary, Colby Covington had this to say.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Jake’s done cosplaying as a fighter for good now. Hang the gloves up for good, Jake! There’s no shortcuts or anything [that] they can ever inject you with that will make you a real fighter!”

Colby Covington Knocked it Out of the Park with Comments on Paul

All told, Covington’s comments were swift with a quick running time of just 56 seconds in the video. Even though he spent less than a minute talking about Jake Paul’s Friday night loss to Anthony Joshua, every last second counted.

He got right to the heart of the matter in his commentary on Sunday. Normally, when Colby Covington says bulletin board material like this, his goal is a simple one of getting people who disagree with him riled up.

This time, however, you’d be hard-pressed to find a single soul who dissents with his remarks. He said everything that needed to be said and said it in a hurry. A couple of years ago, Jake Paul’s brother Logan fought Dillon Danis in a contest ending with Paul winning by way of disqualification.  That contest made a mockery of the Sweet Science of boxing.

Jake Paul’s fight vs. Anthony Joshua served as another reminder of what can happen when a boxing match turns into a sideshow. As someone who watches boxing on a regular basis in addition to a steady diet of MMA clashes, it’s difficult not to side with Colby Covington here. Hopefully, the circus leaves town when the calendar rolls over to Jan. 1 late next week.
