Conor McGregor: “I will knock Dustin out inside 60 seconds”

The “Mystic Mac” prediction is in.

Conor McGregor who looks to face Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 made a bold claim on a recent UFC 257 Countdown trailer stating in a calm manner that he will knock out Poirier inside 60 seconds.

“I will knock Dustin out inside 60 seconds” – Conor McGregor

“I like Dustin, I think he’s a good fighter,” said McGregor. “He’s even a great fighter but great is still levels below me.”

From his demeanour, the “Notorious One” almost seemed cordial but focused. The last time McGregor was this way before a fight, he knocked out Donald Cerrone in just 40 seconds back at UFC 246 in January, 2020. The Irishman has not competed since then and will be eager to follow up on another stellar victory against the Louisiana native this month.

This fight will be a rematch as the two fought against each other a little more than six years ago in 2014 in the featherweight division. In their first bout, McGregor who was the rising contender at the time, knocked out Poirier inside two minutes. The Irishman went on to become the undisputed UFC featherweight and lightweight champion becoming the first man to hold two belts simultaneously.

Poirier, a seasoned veteran

Since the loss to McGregor, Poirier has gone on to have an outstanding record in the lightweight division with a record of 10-2 with wins over multiple former UFC champions including Eddie Alvarez, Anthony Pettis and Max Holloway leading to an interim UFC lightweight belt.

“January 23rd, I going to get my hand raised by any means necessary” – Dustin Poirier

Poirier last competed in a back-and-forth Fight of the Year contender against Dan Hooker, where the American emerged victorious by unanimous decision back in June at UFC Vegas 4. “The Diamond” was coming off a submission loss against Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC lightweight belt but bounced back impressively against the surging Hooker. The American will be looking to capitalise on his victory against McGregor this month.

UFC 257 will take place on the 23rd January on Fight Island, Abu Dhabi.  UFC 257 lineup includes:

  • Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor
  • Michael Chandler vs. Dan Hooker
  • Joanne Calderwood vs. Jessica Eye
