Conor McGregor makes history at UFC 205

It was an historic night for the UFC as it brought it’s 205th event to Madison Square Gardens in New York City tonight. Joanna Jedrzejcyk survived a rough 4th round and possible broken orbital bone to retain her strawweight title against Karolina Kowalkiewicz, and Tyron Woodley retained his 170 lbs. strap in a majority draw against Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. The main event was the most important however, as Conor McGregor fulfilled his prophecy and became the first simultaneous two-division champion in UFC history.

It didn’t even take “The Notorious” Conor McGregor two whole rounds to knock out former champion Eddie Alvarez. The Irishman’s striking acumen was on display this night. Smart movement minimized the Philidelphian’s attempted offense as the featherweight kingpin landed strike after strike. Despite being dropped three times in the first round, Alvarez gutted through it and answered the call for the second round. Sadly, “The Underground King’s” heart could only take him so far. In the second stanza, McGregor would land a beautiful 4 punch combo and put the former Bellator lightweight champ out.

It should be noted that it seemed that the UFC was not prepared for this scenario. There was no second belt on hand for the new emperor of the the lighter weight classes, and officials were forced to scramble for one. An initital report on Twitter from Sun Sports’ Simon Head stated that the second belt may in fact have belonged to Tyron Woodley. This is not a good look for the new WME-IMG ownership group, as it creates a touch of tarnish on the luster of this historic evening.
