David Benavidez and David Lemieux Set to Battle on May 21st

On May 21st,  the super middleweight division is set for a clash of two big time sluggers as David Benavidez and David Lemieux will share the ring for the interim WBC super middleweight title.

David Benavidez Set to Do Battle With David Lemieux in May

Benavidez (25-0, 22 KO) and Lemieux (43-4 36 KO) would be fighting for a shot at reigning WBC super middleweight champion, Canelo Alvarez more than likely in a years time.

Canelo will be tied up with DAZN for fights scheduled in 2022. The first fight will take place in May against WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol and the second fight will take place in September against IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. Canelo is expected to compete in December as well against an opponent that’s yet to be determined.

David Benavidez, 25, has held the WBC 168lbs title twice. His previous reigns as champion were cut short due to being stripped of the title. Benavidez was first stripped for testing positive for cocaine in 2018 and the second coming from failing to make weight in a bout against Alexis Ángulo in 2020.

David Lemieux, 33, is a former IBF middleweight champion who has won five bouts in a row since suffering a loss to Billy Joe Saunders in 2017. None of the bouts were of high profile as Lemieux was acclimating to his new division as the Canadian would struggle to make 160.

Lemieux and Golden Boy Promotions have tried on several occasions to book a fight between he and Canelo but is has not come to fruition. His last three fights have been at 168 lbs. with two being in Canada and one in Mexico.

A Closer Look

Benavidez should be a strong favorite in this match up, but it’s Lemieux’s power and experience that makes all the difference in this contest. Lemieux has fight ending power that even the likes of Golovkin respected in their 2015 bout. It’s Benavidez’s size and natural weight along with his punching combinations and power that will enable him with more tools to win.

The bout between these two exciting super middleweights should be the perfect fight for both men at this stage of their respective careers. Benavidez looks to earn a win over the biggest name in his undefeated career, and Lemieux looks to show why he still belongs in the upper echelon of boxing after a career that has spanned a decade and a half.
