Medical Issues Force Denice Zamboanga To Withdraw From ONE 173 Title Defense

Reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight MMA World Champion Denice Zamboanga has withdrawn from her scheduled title defense against Japanese challenger Ayaka Miura due to medical reasons, the Filipina champion announced via social media. The highly anticipated bout was set for ONE 173: Superbon vs. Noiri at Tokyo’s Ariake Arena on November 16, but it will no longer take place as planned.

Denice Zamboanga Issues Heartfelt Apology to Fans and Opponent

The 28-year-old Denice Zamboanga took to social media to deliver the disappointing news, expressing her genuine regret at being unable to compete against Miura in what promised to be a compelling title bout.

“With a heavy heart, I need to share some difficult news. I was truly excited to defend my belt at ONE 173 against Ayaka. I know how strong and talented she is, and I was looking forward to testing myself against such a worthy challenger. This was a fight I have been preparing for and one I deeply wanted to give to the fans,” Denice Zamboanga stated in her announcement.

The champion’s emotional message revealed the depth of her disappointment at missing this opportunity to showcase her skills on Japanese soil against a formidable opponent.

Denice Zamboanga’s withdrawal represents a significant setback for both the fighter and ONE Championship, as the atomweight division had been building momentum toward this title defense. The Filipina emphasized her commitment to transparency while apologizing to all parties affected by her absence.

“Unfortunately, due to medical reasons, I am unable to step into the Circle this time. It is heartbreaking for me to pull out of this match, and I want to sincerely apologize to my opponent Ayaka, to ONE Championship, to my sponsors, and to all the fans and supporters,” she continued in her statement.

The specific nature of Denice Zamboanga’s medical condition remains undisclosed, but the champion’s decision to withdraw suggests the severity of the issue. The withdrawal is particularly significant for Miura, who had earned her title shot through a five-bout winning streak.

Zamboanga Vows to Make Strong Return

Despite the setback, Denice Zamboanga remained optimistic about her future in the sport and promised fans she would return stronger than ever.

The reigning champion’s determination to bounce back quickly demonstrates her commitment to defending her hard-earned title.

“This sport means everything to me, and I promise I am fully committed to coming back stronger. I am forever grateful to ONE Championship for always believing in me, and to all of you who stand by me through the highs and the lows. This is not the end. I will return stronger and hungrier than ever,” Zamboanga said.

With Zamboanga’s withdrawal, ONE 173 will now be headlined by three title fights. The main event features Superbon defending his ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Title against Masaaki Noiri in a unification bout. The card also includes “Reug Reug” Oumar Kane putting the ONE Heavyweight MMA World Championship on the line against Anatoly Malykhin in a rematch, and Yuya Wakamatsu facing Joshua Pacio for the ONE Flyweight MMA World Championship.
