Dominick Cruz sidelined 6-9 months due to second ACL surgery

The UFC Bantamweight division will be put on hold for even longer, as champ Dominick Cruz has undergone a second major knee surgery this past week.

Cruz’s trainer, Eric Del Fierro spoke with MMAJunkie.com about his situation.

“He’s pissed and disappointed, but I think he’s doing better now. Once he talked to the doctor and found out what was going on, he felt much better.”

The champ is in Los Angeles to meet with doctors who will determine a time-frame for his expected return. Del Fierro believes it will be 6-9 months before we see Cruz step back inside the Octagon.

The bantamweight champ tore his ACL preparing for a rematch with Urijah Faber and underwent surgery back in April. Unfortunately according to Del Fierro, Cruz required the second surgery after  his body rejected one from a cadaver.

The last time Cruz fought was in October 2011, when he defeated Demetrious Johnson to retain the bantamweight championship.

Interim champ Renan Barao has been brought up over the past month, as UFC President Dana White said that he would be defending his interim title. No opponents or contracts have been signed, but the name at the top of the list is Michael McDonald. Even though the champ would like to sit out and wait for Cruz, it looks as if he will be forced to defend the strap. Especially now that Cruz is laid out for that much longer.
