Ask and you shall receive; Dustin Poirier gets fight in home-state vs. Yancy Medeiros in what will be a rather quick turnaround after fighting less than a week ago.
The bout was announced on UFC.com on Tuesday.
Poirier (17-4) is a veteran of the UFC and WEC who returned to lightweight for the first time in about 5 years on April 4 to take on Carlos Diego Ferreira. Poirier stopped the Brazilian with strikes in round one. Before this he was one of the most popular featherweights in the promotion having fought the likes of Conor McGregor, Erik Koch, Cub Swanson, Chan Sung Jung and Max Holloway. His fight with Jung in 2012 was the best fight of the year according to many fans and media outlets.
Medieros (11-2, 1NC) was one of the many fighters brought over from Strikeforce following the Zuffa buy-out. He made his lightweight debut in his first UFC fight, he would lose to Rustam Khabilov in the first round following an injured thumb. After this he knocked out Yves Edwards before the fight was overturned after Yancy tested positive for Marijuana. He then got submitted by Jim Miller on short-notice before winning two in a row over Damon Jackson and Joe Proctor. Both of these submissions earned him a performance of the night.
The bouts placement has yet to be confirmed, but main card is a pretty safe bet.
UFC Fight Night 68 is set to take place at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana on June 6. It will be headlined by a light heavyweight bout between Louisiana’s own Daniel Cormier taking on Ryan Bader. The co-main event is a middleweight bout between Dan Henderson and Tim Boetsch.
