Is Eryk Anders a Future UFC Light Heavyweight Contender?

The former Crimson Tide linebacker, Eryk Anders, is currently 13-3-1 in his MMA career and 3-3 in the UFC. He just signed his next contract to fight. While speaking with Anders on the DragNFist MMA Podcast he could not say who he was fighting at this time. He did, however, mention it would be in the “first quarter of this year” and be at light heavyweight.

Anders entered the UFC as a middleweight and had four fights at this weight class before taking a fight on six days notice against this weekend’s headliner, Thiago Santos. Anders lost that fight by TKO when he collapsed walking back to his corner at the conclusion of round three. His debut as a light heavyweight was impressive, given he took the fight on short notice. His performance would earn him a Fight of the Night bonus. Anders went on to take a fight at middleweight again at UFC 231, replacing Antonio Carlos Junior in his fight against Elias Theodorou. Anders would lose by a close split decision.

Is light heavyweight the right division for Eryk Anders?

When discussing his only UFC fight at light heavyweight Anders said,

I fought Santos at 205 on like six days notice and had a good time, had a great time.”

He has shown his heart and skill in the ring and I believe we will be seeing him in the rankings soon. After the podcast, Anders took to Twitter and said: “Getting back to doing what I love. Fight news coming soon”.

First UFC light heavyweight fight with full camp

Seeing his potential in the UFC light heavyweight division, Anders will take advantage of a full camp this time around. Seeing how he has competed many times on short notice with some success, one would come to believe that with a full camp and coming in his next fight with some good experience against tough competition. It is easy to see that Anders could work his way into the rankings and be knocking on the door to a contender spot in the UFC light heavyweight division. The full interview can be heard on the DragNFist MMA Podcast #13.
