The UFC is finally back after a three week break, and with a decent pay-per-view event, headlined by a looked over featherweight championship bout, Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes. It’s not the most stacked card ever, but should have some interesting fights top to bottom for sure. UFC 179 takes place this Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Ginasio do Maracanazinho in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Here are some things you can definitely expect from the event.
What to expect: UFC 179 edition
1. A very close fight between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes in their second Octagon meeting
The headliner of the pay-per-view has not been getting the attention it needs. It could and likely will be a very close fight between the #2 pound-for-pound fighter in the world and featherweight champ, Aldo, versus the #1 featherweight contender Mendes. They met a couple years ago, and the fight ended quickly, and continued Aldo’s reign at 145lbs. Mendes has looked great since and matured very much, his striking has improved, as well. I don’t think this will end up being a striking battle, but it could. Mendes will probably take Aldo down around the third round, and go from there. Although I do think Mendes will finish Aldo, I’m not going to tell everyone to expect him to win, because I do know many people picking the champion, but I will say expect it to be close. No matter the result, it should be a close and fun fight.
2. A quick night out for Fabio Maldonado on Saturday night
Is Fabio Maldonado the best 205 pounder in the world, and is he super well rounded? No, but he does have some of the crispest boxing in the promotion and should easily pick up a finish victory over Hans Stringer on the main card of UFC 179. There’s not much else to say, just don’t go take a bathroom break during this fight or you may miss it.
3. The Brazilian Glover Teixeira to get back on track with a dominant performance against Phil Davis
Teixeira vs. Davis is a Top 10 light heavyweight fight, but only one fighter will be getting back on track to the road to gold, after they both suffered lopsided decision losses against Jon Jones and Anthony Johnson, respectively. I believe this fight could go either way, but I do think Teixeira has more skill and will be able to keep the fight standing, and will either pick up a late TKO win or an impressive decision victory.
UFC 179 has lots of good things about the card so you should definitely spend your Saturday night this weekend by watching the event, live on pay-per-view with prelims on UFC Fight Pass in Canada and FOX Sports 1 in the United States.
