UFC welterweight champion, Georges St-Pierre recently spoke to Sportsnet.ca about the ongoing feud between middleweight champion Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen. GSP who has held the welterweight belt for an astounding 5 years, has been the centre of a ton of smack talk himself. However, he does not let it go to his head and instead of turning around and dishing it out, he prefers to do his talking in the cage.
St-Pierre believes Chael Sonnen’s goal was to eventually get into Anderson Silva’s head and he believes it worked, “He wants to get into Anderson Silva’s head and he did it. That’s what he wants, because when you fight with emotion, you don’t fight smart. The crowd, they love it. Silva, he’s going to go crazy but he can make a mistake if you do that. It’s a big mistake.”
We heard Silva go off on Sonnen on last weeks UFC 148 media conference call and this shows that he is letting his emotions get the best of him. GSP believes that inside the octagon you must fight smart and that Silva does that, however he may let the heat go to his head.
“You have to go back to the reason he’s a champion. And the reason he’s a champion is because he fights smart, he’s skilled. More skilled than the other guys … He brings the fight where he is the best. He doesn’t go crazy. That’s what Chael Sonnen wants from him.”
Whether Sonnen’s tricks will work on Silva, who knows? But we will be in for a treat as the “rematch of the century” goes down this Saturday night, July 7 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
