Two of the UK’s most well-known and best Muay Thai practitioners clearly have something to settle. The current ONE Championship bantamweight kickboxing and Muay Thai world champion, Jonathan Haggerty has taken a swipe at fellow countryman, Liam Harrison when on the Sky Sports MMA Club podcast.
Haggerty discussed a range of topics, however, it’s his comments on Harrison that have grabbed headlines. They discussed the potential of The General fighting on home soil, to which he replied:
“If it was up to me, I’d fight there next week. Hopefully soon”
He was asked who would be the right opponent for a UK fight and the two discipline champ responded by saying:
“There has been some talk about a few opponents. Like, Liam Harrison was one of them but I’m not sure if he’d like to fight me now, erm, I’m in my prime and I feel like he just wants to fight legends now and just create a legacy”
When questioned further on Harrison, more specifically on his willingness to fight anyone, Haggerty came back with:
“Well we’ll have to get him face to face and we’ll have to tell him face to face that I want to fight him and then maybe we’ll agree there and then with a pen and paper, that’s how it’s going to happen”
He also said:
“We’re both the best in the UK, there’s no doubt about it and once that fight gets agreed, if it ever gets agreed, I feel that the fans are going to jump on it and are going to love it. I’m a fighter and I love to give the fans what they want and I feel Liam Harrison [vs] Jonathan Haggerty is what the fans are calling for and hopefully one day, yeah he grows a pair and we can get it on”
Understandably, the 5th ranked Bad Company man didn’t take too kindly to this, calling him a ‘smug pr*ck’ on X (formerly Twitter) and claiming that he’s knocked out more elite fighters than Haggerty has had fights.
If this fight were to happen, there’s a good chance that the UK fans could finally get a ONE Championship card on their shores.
