Number five ranked, Jose Aldo will be taking on number nine ranked Pedro Munhoz in the co-main event of UFC 265 this weekend. UFC 265 will be held at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. The card will be headlined by Derrick Lewis and Ciryl Gane as they fight for the interim heavyweight title.
Jose Aldo
Jose Aldo is 1-2 since dropping down to bantamweight. He has losses against Marlon Moraes and Petr Yan. Although a lot of people thought Aldo won his fight against Moraes which is why he got a title shot against Petr Yan. Jose Aldo won his most recent fight by decision against Marlon Vera in December of 2020.
Aldo used to be famously known for his leg kicks. Recently he has gone away from his leg kicks and he now tries to fight more like a boxer. For example, he only landed nine leg kicks against Yan and only four against Moraes. Back in 2012 when Aldo fought Chad Mendes the first time, Aldo landed 11 leg kicks in the first four minutes of the fight. Needless to say, Aldo should go back to chopping at his opponents’ legs.
Aldo has a professional record of 29-7 with 17 of those wins coming by way of knockout. Although he is a black belt in jiujitsu, Aldo only has one win in his professional career by submission. He has been knocked out in four of his seven losses. He was knocked out by Conor McGregor for the featherweight title in 2015, twice by Max Holloway, and most recently by Petr Yan.
Pedro Munhoz
Munhoz will be coming into this fight after winning a decision over Jimmie Rivera in his last one back in February. He holds a professional record of 19-5-1 with eight of those wins being submissions. Munhoz has never been finished in his professional career. He has won six performance bonuses and has a UFC record of 9-4-1. He is a black belt in jiujitsu and a brown belt in Judo.
In his time with the UFC, Munhoz has wins over guys like Jimmie Rivera, Cody Garbrandt, Bryan Caraway, and Rob Font. All of his losses come to extremely high-level fighters such as Rivera, Raphael Assuncao, John Dodson, Aljamain Sterling, and Frankie Edger. Munhoz is a former RFA bantamweight champion and he will need to get a win over Aldo on Saturday if he hopes to wrap that UFC gold around his waist.
