The Karate Combat Season 4 press conference has just taken place. Anticipation for the promotion is at an all-time high after the conclusion of season 3 saw its first truly great fight. In addition, the announcement of former GLORY and Bellator featherweight champion Gabriel Varga joining the promotion has also raised expectations. This comes on top of the return of five-time point karate champion – and now Olympic silver medallist representing Azerbaijan – Rafael Aghayev who has not been seen since season 1. These decorated combat sports athletes will likely serve to bolster the roster of Karate Combat significantly, as it prepares for the spring where it will resume broadcasting matches.
Three matches were announced at the press conference. First and foremost, Rafael Aghayev will have his second fight in the promotion against Zsolt Habda. Aghayev is extremely accredited in point fighting competition but his relative full contact inexperience may make him vulnerable to an upset. A factor that his opposite number Habda could certainly take advantage of. This fight represents a significant breakout opportunity for Habda if he is victorious.
Secondly, Igor De Castañeda will face off against Ross Levine. Levine is a former GLORY kickboxer who has already won his first fight in Karate Combat, displaying ferocious leg kicks and pressure. De Castañeda on the other hand is a five-fight veteran in Karate combat coming off of an impressive KO victory over Jorge Perez. The winner will get the opportunity to challenge middleweight champion Shahin Atamov, so the fight carries high stakes.
Thirdly, Karate Combat lightweight champion Edgars Skrivers will defend his belt against Luiz Rocha. Skrivers is possibly the best talent Karate Combat has produced, defending his champion status multiple times against strong opposition using his high guard and point black spinning back kicks. However Rocha is an eight-fight veteran of the promotion with his own impressive wins over Myrza-Bek Tebuev (who Skrivers also beat) and Illias Mardi. This will likely not be particularly easy for either man.
