Kyle Kingsbury Claims He Sees No Weakness In Bonnar’s Game

Kyle Kingsbury (11-2-0 1NC MMA, 4-1 UFC) has found a place among the UFC’s light heavyweight division as a dude who just brings it. The former Arizona State University Football star will face off against Stephan Bonnar this Saturday on the main card of UFC 139.

Kingsbury has found a claim to fame with his trademark fanny pack, which he wears to his weigh-ins on most occassions. Will he be able to wear it to the octagon?

“I don’t like to wear it out to the cage because I like to wear as little as possible out there, but I’ll wear it to the weigh-ins as I normally do. There are a couple sponsors out there I’m talking to right now about sponsoring the fanny pack.”

For his last few fights Kingsbury has been working with controversial trainer Victor Conte. Conte has helped the likes of Barry Bonds, Shane Mosley and Marion Jones, who then fell from fame when he sold them down the river in the BALCO scandal. Kingsbury speaks about how Conte has helped his game more than others.

“Victor knows a lot of science when it comes to weight cut, when it comes to proper nutrition and supplementation. He’s also introduced me to Remi Korchemny who was a track and field coach, who helped me a lot with my plyometrics, my explosiveness and my agility. I’m just working with him (Conte) on being a better athlete.”

Kingsbury faced Fabio Maldonado back in June at The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale. He won the fight via unanimous decision and also earned the Fight of the Night honors. The fight was an absolute war with Kingsbury taking some serious body shots and Maldonado shutting Kingsbury’s eye with a devastating 1-2 combo late in the third round.

“The eye is 100%, it healed up pretty quickly for an orbital fracture. The fight was real hard, it was the toughest fight I’ve ever been in. Maldonado hit me to the body and those were pretty excruciating shots to be honest with you. The eye didn’t hurt so bad when it happened, it obviously looked a lot worse than it was. I had a lot of pain in my stomach no question, he knocked the wind out of me several times and that took something out of my gas tank for sure.”

At UFC 139 Kyle Kingsbury will be stepping into the octagon against Stephan Bonnar. Both men are absolute warriors and must be one of the reasons why the UFC have put them against each other. In a previous interview Kingsbury stated that Bonnar would more than likely look to take him down, because that is a weakness in his game. He states in this interview that he sees no holes in Bonnar’s game.

“Stephan doesn’t really have any weaknesses. He looks at me and sees my ground game as my weakness. I look at him and I don’t see any weaknesses, but I do see areas that I wanna focus on. Simply for where my strengths are. Obviously I want to keep it standing, so we can put on a show for the crowd. I also want to keep it standing because I think I can beat him there. That goes for all areas standing, standing outside, standing in the clinch or pushed up against the cage. There are going to be times when we hit the mat, but I’m prepared for that. I’m just looking forward to an all out battle and taking this fight anywhere it goes.”
