Melvin Guillard released from UFC

Lightweight Melvin Guillard has been released from the UFC after a nine-year run.

“The Young Assassin” was released on Thursday night after going on 2-5 in his last seven fights. MMAFighting.com was first to report the release.

Guillard (31-13-2. 2 NC) was a vet coming in to the UFC, with already 25 fights under his belt. He made his splash inside the Octagon after being a contestant on the second season of The Ultimate Fighter.

Most recently, Guillard lost a one-sided unanimous decision against Michael Johnson at UFC Fight Night 30 earlier this month. UFC President Dana White was extremely critical of Guillard’s performance.

“There’s no doubt Melvin ran the entire fight and was incredibly passive, the complete opposite of how he used to fight. There was a lot of smack talk leading up to that fight, and those are the fights that everybody gets excited about, and nine times out of 10 they end up like tonight. Those drive me crazy.”

Guillard was 12-9 under the UFC banner.

Malki Kawa, who is the manager of Guillard, sent out a Tweet this morning with news that a number of organizations are interested in the 30-year old.

We will keep you updated on Guillard as it occurs.
